To Bart:
I memorized this poem in my first college English course. I recited it so well I actually got an A and decided that I should major in English (nothing like making major life decisions on a whim, right?). I thought the words spoke so beautifully of how a marriage should be. Little did I know that it was actually possible and that just a few years later I would have that very thing. I wish I could say it better (or even not in a poem since you are a scientist and not a poet) how much I love you, but this will have to do. Here's to three wonderful years! (starting tomorrow)
Most Like an Arch This Marriage
Most like an arch—an entrance which upholds
and shores the stone-crush up the air like lace.
Mass made idea, and idea held in place.
A lock in time. Inside half-heaven unfolds.
Most like an arch—two weaknesses that lean
into a strength. Two fallings become firm.
Two joined abeyances become a term
naming the fact that teaches fact to mean.
Not quite that? Not much less. World as it is,
what’s strong and separate falters. All I do
at piling stone on stone apart from you
is roofless around nothing. Till we kiss
I am no more than upright and unset.
It is by falling in and in we make
the all-bearing point, for one another’s sake,
in faultless failing, raised by our own weight.
P.S. I really hate it when people post sappy things on their blogs, but here I am doing it again. I guess love will do that to a girl, huh?

Thanks for sharing such an incredible poem! (sniffle) I love how when we memorize poetry it becomes part of us for the rest of our lives, much more than just reading it. I had to memorize lots of poems for my Russian classes in college, and my professor picked some really good ones. I love how poetry can say volumes with few words.
and.....
Happy Anniversary! I'm so glad that Bart found you. We love having you in our family.

Happy Anniversary!
Katie, I love this poem and enjoy seeing what love has done to you...even to the point of posting sappy poems. You two are great together; glad you've enjoyed these three years and wish you many more wonderful years to come.
